Greetings Fellow '02ers and Bimwads!

The date of our gathering of the "'02 Faithful" is again fast approaching (May 17, 2003). This year’s event will again be held at the Carlisle Import-Kit/Replicar Nationals (May 16-18), on Saturday May 17th on the showfield. We will have our own tent and designated parking area. I have requested that we again be next to the Nittany Bimmers Chapter (BMW CCA). The BMWs are going to be “there in force” this year! The Nittany Bimmers cooked lunch for us last year…a pleasant surprise!

Last year we had 75 cars show up from as far away as Kansas City. This year I have no idea how many ‘02s will show up at this time, but whoever comes is guaranteed one thing…having a good time. I just want to update everyone on the planned activities. Here ya go:

Event: Mid-Atlantik '02 Fest IV

When: May 17, 2003 (Approx. time: - 9:00am to 5:00pm). The gates will open at 7:00am, but Please don’t be there that early, as I WON’T be <g>. I’ll probably arrive about 8:00am or so. Thanks to those who have offered to help me (Juan Cardona & Bill Williams). If you come before 9:00am, that’s fine, but I’ll probably put you to work!!!...Thanks!

Place: Carlisle Import-Kit/Replicar Nationals (May 16-18), Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Gate 3 (the showfield gate), off Spring Road. Check Out the Carlisle Productions, Inc. Website at www.carsatcarlisle.com for more information.

Directions: If you are coming from the South on I-81, take Exit 44 to Plainfield (into Carlisle), follow red & white Carlisle Fairgrounds signs, bear left onto College Street, right onto “G” Street (Exits 45, 47, 48, & 49 will also get you into Carlisle). If you are coming from the North, East, or West (most of you will be on the PA Turnpike), take Exit 16 off the Turnpike, then take Route 11 South into Carlisle approx. 2-1/2 miles to Clay Street (turn right). If you are travelling from the North heading South on I-81, take Exit 52 (Route 11 South), and go approx. 3-1/2 miles to Clay Street (turn right). Follow the signs toward the fairgrounds...remember, follow the signs to Gate 3 (assuming you will be on the showfield). If you are just coming as a spectator, you can park in General Admission Parking. An optional route (per the latest brochure), if you are coming to a Carlisle Event from the North, may be faster if you get off of I-81 south at Exit 57 (Mechanicsburg Rt. 114), turn right and follow 114 to Rt 944. At the Rt 944 intersection, turn left onto Rt 944, follow to Rt 34 and make a left onto Rt 34. Follow Rt. 34 to the fairgrounds.

Pre-Registration: Carlisle Productions, Inc. Registration - There will be a $15.00 registration fee per car (with 2 adults)-up $5 over last year….sorry, out of my control). This will get you into the showfield, and includes a goody bag, and be eligible for the car give-away on Sunday. Please be sure to pre-register online at www.carsatcarlisle.com or by mail (send in the brochure pre-registration form). If you have not received a brochure (from being registered last year) and would like one, please call Carlisle Productions at (717) 243-7855 and ask them to send you one. For “Club” put “Mid-Atlantik ’02 Fest IV”. Pre-registration is required, however, if for some reason you can’t decide until the last minute, Carlisle Productions “may” (i.e. they “will”) let you onto the showfield upon payment of the $15 registration fee. PLEASE don’t plan to do it this way however, as it will create havoc with our planning for the proper number of parking spaces. Once you pre-register you will receive a confirmation in the mail from Carlisle Productions, Inc.

In addition, Mid-Atlantik ’02 Fest IV Pre-Registration Is Required - There will also be a pre-registration fee for Mid-Atlantik ’02 Fest IV. Sorry, but it has to be this way this year. Last year I was in the hole financially way too much. I have been advised by my ’02 friends that I should quit going several thousand dollars “out-of-pocket” and charge a fee. Of course the fee will include something. There are two options available: Fee A will include a dash plaque and T-Shirt (must indicate size when pre-registering) and go toward the event costs…if more than one shirt is desired add the appropriate amount. Fee is $20.00 (add $16 for each additional shirt desired); Fee B will include the dash plaque only plus go toward event costs. Fee is $5.00. The pre-registration fee can be mailed to me at my address listed below (checks accepted), or paid through my Paypal account (go to Paypal.com, my account e-mail is Im4BMW@aol.com).

Accommodations: There are numerous places to stay in the Carlisle region, due to the many car shows put on annually. Carlisle Productions, Inc. has provided me with a listing of area hotels (total of 81!). However, they recommend calling Hershey-Capital Region Visitors Bureau 1-877-231-ROOM (7666) to make reservations. You can call Monday – Friday 8:00am to 7:00pm EST. If you need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me, and I’ll gladly get this list to you (via mail or fax) or help you in any way that I can. Camping is also available (see the brochure).

Food: You are on your own regarding the food. Just about anything and everything is available in the Carlisle food vendor areas at reasonable prices. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus are available. Of course, you are welcome to bring your own picnic lunch.

Agenda:

9:00am Mid-Atlantik ’02 Fest IV Car Registration: Cars begin arriving and parking in the designated area on the showfield. Only 2002s (and of course 1600s, etc.) are allowed in the showfield area for Mid-Atlantik ’02 Fest IV. If you are not bringing an ’02 (but another Bimmer), you can register with the Nittany Bimmers to gain entrance to the showfield. Or simply park in the general parking area. All 2002s should line up similar to last year (in designated rows)..I need some help “parking” the cars. Simply park where designated, allowing ample space between cars, raise your hoods and trunks if you like.

Each car will receive a Registration Number for voting purposes for awards. Each owner/driver will receive one raffle ticket for the drawing for door prizes. Note: Only one (1) ticket per car. The Registration Form should be placed on the dash, for voting purposes, and most importantly, to let everyone know whose car it is.

Please be sure to log the miles traveled to the event as attendees will be asked to put down the miles driven when registering..there will be a plaque for farthest distance driven.

9:00am to 11:00am - Get organized, clean cars, socialize, wander around the grounds and vendor areas, spend money ($$), etc. There are facilities near the showfield for washing cars.

11:00am to 1:30pm - Voting on the cars...forms will be handed out during registration for voting on the cars. Turn ballots in by 1:00pm please. Lunchtime, visit the food vendors, picnicking, swap meet, etc. The Swap Meet will be ongoing throughout the day....NOTE: You MUST keep all parts for sale in your trunks..selling parts on the showfield is not permitted.

1:30pm to 2:30pm – Special guest speaker Ray Korman will share his experiences with ‘02s over the years (racing, repairing, the reason flashing headlights really got started, engine rebuilding). Korman Autoworks is also offering some door prizes!

2:30pm to 4:00pm - Awards will be announced based on the voting (see below), and the Drawing for Door Prizes.

4:00pm to 5:00pm - Relaxing time....Socializing, Explore the vendor areas, Purchase or Order T-Shirts, etc.

5:00pm - Time to head for home or to your next car event <g>…or go to Summit Point Raceway on Sunday!!! Drive Safely! Of course, you are welcome to stay through Sunday for more planned activities for the Import Show. There will be a drawing “give-away” for a car Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm, which you will have tickets for in your goody bag. The car being given away this year is a red 1970 Fiat 850 Spyder. Must be present to win. I remember one year they gave away a Cobra kit-car and an 18 year old kid won it!

Awards: There will be "popular"* voting on the cars for awards....tentative
categories will be as follows:

Favorite non-tii Round Taillight (pre '74)
Favorite non-tii Square Taillight ('74-'76)
Favorite Round Taillight tii
Favorite Square Taillight tii
Most Original
Farthest Distance Traveled (No Cheating! You must log in when registering))
Drivers' Choice Award

*Note: This is not a concours event...meant to be relaxing<g>, and ALL 2002s (and 1600s, etc.) are beautiful!!! (to me anyway), thus I don't like to use the word "Best" in the voting categories.

Sponsors: Thanks go out to the following sponsors of this event who have so kindly offered merchandise, gift certificates, and funds for expenses and awards for the event:

Event T-Shirts: I plan to have “some” T-Shirts made up again this year for purchase at the event. But, the supply will be much more limited, due to the pre-registration requirement described above…if you want a shirt for sure, order one when you pre-register please. I also have a limited number of T-Shirts left over from prior years events that will be available also. Cost should be about $16, and they are Hanes Beefy-T’s (they wear great).

Looking forward to seeing you all at Mid-Atlantik ’02 Fest IV....Happy '02ing Everyone...Now get out there and DRIVE!!! ....and have a safe journey!
